Empowering Caregivers and Therapists: Recap of the 2023 Autism Intervention Training in Port Harcourt, and Beyond.

In a heartening effort to support individuals with autism and developmental disabilities, the Talklove Africa Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Houston, Clear Lake, and the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, organized the 2023 Autism Intervention Training. Held on the 20th of May, 2023, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, this event aimed to equip caregivers, parents, and therapists with practical knowledge about autism, early detection, and effective interventions. The training promised positive outcomes that would contribute to the well-being and development of autistic individuals and special needs children.

The event began with an opening remark by our Executive Director Cynthia Obinwanne (ACIPM) followed by enlightening session on autism, led by renowned expert in the field Loukia Tsami (BCBA) and Abdulkadiri Oputa (BA). Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of autism spectrum disorder, its characteristics, and the challenges faced by individuals on the spectrum. By increasing awareness, the training aimed to promote inclusivity and acceptance within communities.

One of the significant highlights of the training was the emphasis on early detection and intervention. Research has shown that early diagnosis and intervention can greatly improve the outcomes for individuals with autism. Participants were provided with valuable insights into recognizing early signs of autism and were equipped with practical strategies to intervene effectively. By sharing evidence-based practices, the training empowered caregivers, parents, and therapists to provide timely support and interventions for children with autism.

The 2023 Autism Intervention Training brought forth several positive outcomes.
